Legal aid refers to a legal protection system where lawyers organized by government-established legal aid institutions or legally recognized law firms, which provides free legal services to people who are economically disadvantaged or involved in special cases, especially in rural areas. Special cases refer to those cases where, according to Articles 35(2) and 35(3) of Criminal Procedure Law of the People's Republic of China, a criminal suspect or defendant is blind, deaf, mute, or mentally ill to the extent that they have not fully lost the ability to recognize or control their actions, and if they do not have a defense lawyer, the people's courts, people's procuratorates, and public security organs must notify the legal aid institutions to assign a lawyer to provide defense. In cases where a criminal suspect or defendant may be sentenced to life imprisonment or death, and they have not appointed a defense lawyer, the people's courts, people's procuratorates, and public security organs are required to notify the legal aid institutions to assign a lawyer to provide defense.
